News about avocados from Spain

Reliance on a unified variety could become a weakness “

The challenges faced by the Spanish avocado sector

Avocado New from world. Cultivation of avocados in Spain was considered impossible – until 1966, when German Dieter Wienberg insisted on making it happen. This marked the origin of La Mayora, an experimental exploitation of CSIC that led the green gold revolution. A half century later, it has fruit. Through a world madness on avocados, half of all avocados produced in Europe are planted in Malaga and Granada.

In fact, the success of producing a tropical crop in the southeastern part of Spain was an agronomic achievement that today brings great profit to the Americanproducers of Persea . In the last four years, the price of avocados has doubled as a result of demand, and with it, the national production of this fruit.

According to the latest report of the World Organization for Avocado (WAO), which appeared in recent days, in 2018 Spanish consumers ate 19 million avocados more than 2017, so consumption was 35% higher. However, the future of the Spanish avocado sector is still under threat, which shows the fragility of this emerging “green gold” industry.

An ally against enemies
Two of the most frightened words of Spanish avocados growers are Rosellinia necatrix, the name of the pathogen causing the rotting of the white root. This fungus is on the ground, it is very difficult to eradicate and infect other trees with underground contact of the roots. Recently, the Andalusian researchers gave a closer look to some avocado trees that, even though surrounded by rotten specimens, were still healthy.

EnHV1, whose discovery appeared in Frontiers in Microbiology, could become a biological control weapon to protect the trees in Malaga and Granada. In recent years, growers have stepped up their battle against white rot, which has recently spread to mangos and Oligonychus punicae , which became a major parasite in Axarkia two years ago.

The
Hass Achilles’ Hassan Avocados today account for 70% of Spain’s total production and this is a problem or has the potential to become one. However, La Mayora researchers have warned that “dependence on a variety seen in different parts of the world may become a weakness in the long run for countries which, like ours, have a comparatively small production and few options for expanding “. This concern is due to climate requirements of this kind that allow other countries to produce them throughout the year.

Avocado New from world. “The commitment to meet the European requirement exclusively with Hass variety avocados could lead Spain to become a simple bridge for the re-export of Hass avocados from other parts of the world, which is already the case when there is no local production. This, without doubt, could threaten the future of cultivation in our country, “said scientists headed by Iñaki Hormaza.

Long-term drought
According to the water footprint network, the production of one kilogram of avocados requires about 2,000 liters of water (much more than one kilo of vegetables, cereals, fruits or even milk) and that in a climate such as Spanish, it is not good news, when much of the annual European demand depends on our avocados.

One of the main conclusions was that it is necessary to adopt measures to ensure the viability of avocado crops in the southeast of Andalusia.

Avocado New from world.  “Avocados agriculture should adapt to climate change and help mitigate its effects by promoting soil and water conservation policies,” and the hardest of all, “improving crop yields and making more resource-efficient use”.
